To add a discount to upsells, you can just add in the amount or percentage you want to discount. When the item gets added to cart, the discount will be applied to the upsell.

You can use the latest Shopify Functions or use the legacy Shopify Scripts to apply this discount.

How to upsell to a subscription in checkout and cart

To upsell or cross sell to a subscription you can use UpsellPlus to upsell one off purchases to subscriptions in the checkout and cart. The steps below show the process for offering a subscription in the checkout.

Create a checkout offer

Click 'Create offer' > Checkout

|| Note: upselling to subscriptions in checkout is only available for Shopify Plus merchants. All merchants can use the upselling to subscriptions in cart or post-purchase.

Add a product with a selling plan

Choose a product in the resource picker that has at least one selling plan in your subscription app.

Tick 'Add as a subscription'

This will show you all the available selling plans for the selected product

Cool! Now you have an upsell set up that will show the subscription product. Add some copy in the callout banner, product title, subtitle or marketing message to make it clear to customers this is a subscription.

Now the upsell will be added to cart, but it won't replace the item in cart yet. To let the customer swap out a one off product for a subscription:

Open the app and create your first offer

You can create upsells on the cart page, checkout page and post-purchase page.

| If you're on a Shopify Plus plan you will have access to cart, checkout and post-purchase upsells. Shopify only allows Plus merchants to modify their checkout. | If you're on a Shopify Basic, Standard or Professional Plan, you will have access to cart and post-purchase upsells.

How to A/B test checkout upsells

‍‍To find which upsell works best in your checkout, you can now use A/B testing within UpsellPlus.‍

To enable A/B testing, go to the UpsellPlus app. Create an offer, choose ‘Checkout’‍

Once you’ve added a product and set up the design and discounts you want, you’ll see the following option.‍‍

Click the button! The app will copy your current offer and create a B version. You can toggle between the two versions with the tabs at the bottom. ‍

Here’s an example of a simple A/B test setup that will test the callout banner that introduces the upsell offers in checkout: ‘Frequently bought together’ vs ‘73% of customers also bought’‍‍

You can also see the impressions, conversion and revenue for each version. Once you publish the offer to your checkout, 50% of shoppers will see version A and 50% of shoppers will see version B. ‍

The smart rules are not part of the A/B version testing as that would invalidate the 50/50% visibility for shoppers.‍

Some tips to run an effective A/B test:‍

To get a useful result out of an A/B test, define your hypothesis. In simple words, say what you want to test:‍

How to automatically add a free gift to the cart

Create a new offer. Select ‘Checkout Page’. The product you set up will be added automatically to the cart once the shoppers navigates to the checkout.
Scroll down to the Smart Rule section Tick the ‘Automatically add to cart when conditions are met’ checkbox.

Make the product free To make it free, we will set the discount price at 100%. You can configure this under your selected product in the UpsellPlus admin.
