Which payment methods can be used to trigger a post-purchase page offer?

Overview

Post-purchase offers are an effective strategy to increase average order value (AOV) by presenting customers with additional products or services immediately after they complete a purchase. However, the availability of these offers depends on the payment method used during checkout. Shopify has specific guidelines that determine which payment methods can trigger the post-purchase page.

Shopify guards this page to avoid misleading offers that get charged to the customer’s payment card.‍

This means that not all payment methods will trigger the post-purchase page. Keep this in mind when testing it for your store!‍

Supported Payment Methods

The following payment methods will trigger the post-purchase page:

Credit Cards: Including Visa, AMEX, Discover, and MasterCard
PayPal: Standard PayPal payments are supported.
PayPal Express: Express checkout via PayPal is also compatible.

Note: To enable PayPal as a payment method for post-purchase offers, additional configuration may be required. Refer to the guide on setting up PayPal for post-purchase offers for detailed instructions.

Unsupported Payment Methods
The following payment methods will not trigger the post-purchase page:

Cash on Delivery: Orders paid upon delivery are not eligible.
Express Payment Methods: Such as AfterPay, Apple Pay, Amazon Pay, and Google Pay.
Buy Now, Pay Later Services: Including Klarna and Affirm.
Debit Cards: Transactions using debit cards are not supported.
Bank Transfers: Direct bank transfer payments will not trigger post-purchase offers.
Gift Cards: Orders paid entirely with gift cards are ineligible.

Note: If an order is partially paid with a gift card and the remaining balance is covered by a supported payment method, post-purchase offers may still be triggered.

Currency Considerations

Post-purchase offers will only display when the order currency matches the primary market currency configured for your store. For example, if a customer checks out in USD and your primary market is set to EUR, the post-purchase page will not be triggered. This is due to Shopify's limitation on multi-currency support for post-purchase offers - find out more about it here.

Key Considerations
Payment Gateway Configuration: Ensure that your store's payment gateways are set up to accept supported payment methods to maximize the reach of post-purchase offers.
Customer Payment Preferences: Be aware of your customers' preferred payment methods and consider how these preferences may impact the effectiveness of post-purchase offers.
Testing: Regularly test post-purchase offers using different payment methods to ensure they function as intended and provide a seamless customer experience.
