How to add a downsell post-purchase offer

Overview

Implementing downsell offers in the post-purchase phase can effectively boost your store's Average Order Value (AOV). A downsell presents customers with an alternative product at a lower price or a higher discount after they decline an initial upsell offer. This strategy increases the likelihood of additional sales by offering more appealing options to hesitant customers.

You can achieve this by setting up two consecutive post-purchase offers. When the customer denies the first offer, the second one will show.

This could be the same item at an ever higher discount or another item at a lower price. ‍

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Access the UpsellPlus App
  • Log in to your Shopify Admin panel.
  • Navigate to the UpsellPlus app.

  1. Create or Select a Post-Purchase Offer
  • In the UpsellPlus dashboard, choose an existing post-purchase offer or click to create a new one.

  1. Add the Initial (Upsell) Product
  • Within the offer setup, add the first product you intend to present to customers post-purchase.

  1. Configure the Downsell Product
  • Scroll down to find the option to add a downsell offer.
  • Click + Add a downsell offer and select the item you wish to offer as a downsell. This could be the same product at a higher discount or a different product at a lower price.

  1. Set the Display Condition for the Downsell

Before adding the second product, you'll see options to determine when this offer should be shown:

  • Accepted: The downsell is shown if the initial offer is accepted.
  • Denied: The downsell is shown if the initial offer is declined.

For a traditional downsell strategy, you can select Denied.

  1. Finalize and Activate the Offer
  • Review your settings to ensure accuracy.
  • Save and activate the post-purchase offer to make it live in your store.

Example Scenario

Consider a customer who has just completed a purchase. You present them with an upsell offer for a premium hoodie. If they decline this offer, a downsell is triggered, presenting a t-shirt at a lower price or with a higher discount. This approach provides an alternative that may better suit the customer's preferences or budget, increasing the chance of an additional sale.

Customer Experience

If the customer chooses not to accept any post-purchase offers, they can:

  • Close the tab.
  • Click 'View order confirmation' to proceed to the thank you page.
  • Decline both offers and complete their initial purchase without any additions.

Their original order will process as usual without any post-purchase add-ons.
