How to build a post-purchase upsell funnel (templates, downsells and preview)

A post-purchase funnel shows one-click offers right after checkout, before the thank-you page. The shopper has already paid, so accepting adds the item to their order without re-entering payment details. Each offer leads to a next step: accepting can lead to a bigger offer (upsell) and declining to a cheaper one (downsell). Shopify allows up to 3 accepted post-purchase offers per checkout.

  • Where: Offers → Create Post-Purchase Offer
  • Fastest start: pick a funnel template, add your products, set one max discount
  • Check before going live: use Preview funnel to click through every step

Post-purchase funnel structure with Upsell 1, upsells on accept, downsells on decline, and funnel templates

Before you start

Post-purchase offers need UpsellPlus selected as your post-purchase app in Shopify: Settings → Checkout → Post-purchase page. See How to enable UpsellPlus Post Purchase Offers in your Shopify admin.

How a funnel is structured

Every funnel starts with Upsell 1. Each step branches on the shopper's choice:

After checkout → Upsell 1
├─ accepted → Upsell 2
│ ├─ accepted → Upsell 3
│ └─ declined → Downsell 2
└─ declined → Downsell 1
├─ accepted → Upsell 2b
└─ declined → Downsell 1b

You don't have to fill every step. When a step is empty, the funnel ends there and the shopper goes to the thank-you page.

  1. Go to Offers → Create Post-Purchase Offer.
  2. Under Start with a proven funnel, pick a template:
    • Quick Win: one strong offer right after checkout
    • Double Down: four offers. Yes leads to a bigger offer, no leads to a cheaper one, with AI-picked products where it counts
    • Start from scratch: build the funnel offer by offer
  3. Select a product for each step that needs one.
  4. Set a Max discount. This is the deepest discount in the funnel. Earlier offers get a smaller share, so you keep margin on the easy wins.
  5. Click Create funnel. The offers are created as inactive, and the funnel builder opens, where you can edit each offer's products, copy and translations.
  6. When you're ready, click Activate funnel. Nothing goes live before this.

Option 2: Build the funnel step by step

  1. Go to Offers → Create Post-Purchase Offer and choose Start from scratch.
  2. Create Upsell 1: choose products (Specific Products, From Collections or Tags, Automatic, or From a Bundle), a discount, and optional targeting.
  3. On the funnel tree, click Create offer on the step you want to fill next, for example Downsell 1.
  4. For each step, set:
    • Offer name
    • Timer: an optional countdown, in seconds
    • Buttons: accept and decline button text
    • Order Summary Labels: Quantity, Subtotal, Shipping, Taxes, Total
  5. Click Activate funnel.

Give each page its own design and text

By default, every step uses Upsell 1's design. To change one step:

  • Page text: set a Callout banner and Callout subtext shown at the top of that page. Leave blank to reuse the first page's text.
  • Page design: click Customise this page to give it its own colors and layout. Changes to Upsell 1 then no longer apply to this page. Use Reset to Upsell 1 design to undo.

Preview the whole funnel

Click Preview funnel to see exactly what the shopper sees, inside Shopify's post-purchase frame. Click accept or decline to walk down each branch, all the way to the thank-you page. You don't need to place test orders.

Track funnel performance

Each step on the funnel tree shows its last 30 days: Views, Revenue, RPI (per view) and Conversion / view. For the full report, click View analytics or go to Analytics → Funnels, which shows impressions, accepts, accept rate and revenue for every step, plus how many shoppers declined or left.
